The cave paintings were primarily of animals like ancient versions of cattle, horses and bison, along with some abstract symbols. When we visited, we went through Lascaux IV, the fourth of these “duplicate” caves. ![]() The caves were discovered in 1940, but due to damage caused by the carbon dioxide from visitors (among other things), the original cave was closed and an exact replica was created. The amazing Lascaux caves contain paintings estimated to date back 17,000 years. The famous Lascaux prehistoric cave was only a half an hour away from where we stayed, and one of the reasons we wanted to stay in the area, so I booked tickets in advance for us to visit. We walked to town for a few meals, for our daily run to the boulangerie, and to just explore. We explored the city early in the morning and had plenty of time to play a bit of catch in the town center before it got hot and crowded! We were a pleasant 10-minute walk into the charming town of Sarlat (though the walk was a little more pleasant on the way into town – it wasn’t noticeably downhill when we walked there, but it did seem to be noticeably uphill as we walked back home!) If you want more detail this is where we stayed. The house had a big yard and a gravel driveway where the boys spent much of the week playing football (soccer). So we were pleasantly surprised to roll up to a beautiful, huge farmhouse overlooking the town. The week followed our 3 day hike in the Pyrenees, so you can probably imagine how we spent the first few days – showering, washing clothes and de-ticking ourselves (yes, really – but at least we got an experience at a french doctor out of it!).īecause I had booked lots of different accommodations for our months-long summer trip, I wasn’t quite sure what place I had booked for this stop. This will ensure that you see all the best sights and give you an insider’s view into this fascinating slice of human history.Towards the beginning of our summer road trip around Europe, we spent a week at a house in Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the beautiful Dordogne region of France. The best way to see and understand the caves is with this top-rated Lascaux IV and cave art guided tour. Today the original Lascaux is closed to the public, but visitors can admire an exact replica, Lascaux IV, located nearby. The Caves of Lascaux are on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list and are a stunning and awe-inspiring look into France’s very long past. The site consists of a complex of caves with several different areas, and The cave paintings mostly depict large animals that were native to the region at that time. There are several similarly decorated caves in the Vézère Valley, but the quality, age, and size of the Lascaux collection put them in a class of their own. Located about half an hour away from Sarlat by car, Lascaux is home to a collection of Paleolithic cave paintings, some of them estimated to be up to 20,000 years old! The Prehistoric Grottoes of Lascaux are a great choice when you’re wondering what to do in Sarlat. Visit the Prehistoric Grottoes of Lascaux on a Day Trip Unfortunately, we could not visit the top of the church due to COVID-19 restrictions, but everybody who took that lift will tell you it is one of Sarlat’s must-dos!Ĩ. It’s a glass lift that will take you 27 meters to the top of the bell tower for panoramic views of the city and a brief but fascinating lecture on the measures taken to preserve the town. However, the top attraction at this church is the Sarlat Panoramic Elevator, one of the best things to do in Sarlat. It was renovated by Sarlat resident and architect Jean Nouvel, and it features a market area and rooms that are used for cultural activities. Today this church is little more than a few ruins dotted by stone gargoyles, and yet it’s no longer abandoned. It was once a symbol of the success of the town’s middle class, but it was damaged during the French Revolution and abandoned in 1794. Mary is located in the city’s main square and is surrounded by charming outdoor cafés. Enjoy the View from the Top of the Old Church of St.
